FALSE DECLARATION
TO OBTAIN NATURALISATIOH;
A DALMATIAN'S OFFFENCE.
A false declaration by a Dalmatian in making application for naturalisation resulted in Jure Kostanich, a from the North, coming befor<« Mr. J W. Poynton, 5.M.,, to-day. The evidence was to the effect that Kostanich arrived in the Dominion in November, 1913, from Sydney, being capable oi reading English and of speaking it haltingly. He went to the Northern gumfields at Waihopo, and very shortly afterwards he applied for naturalisation papers, and signed a declaration John M. Tynan, J.P., that he had beet resident in the country for six yeara In consequence of his residential qualifiv cations he was granted naturalisation. Subsequently the matter was brought under police notice, and Kostanich said he had been told that if he said he haO been fh-e years in the country he coula buy a farm. He admitted having madt the false declaration about the time he had been in the country. Detective CumTaxngs, who had prosecuted inquiries, stated that the police report of accused's character and conduct since he had beei in the country was favourable.
Kostanich entered a plea of guilty, and was committed to the Supreme for sentence.
