IF PUT TO THE VOTE.
COLONEL F. VERNON WTI- , 'i-""* VIEW. Colonel Wiley towards the end of 1930 rpported to the British Commonweaitn Union, of which Sir W. B. Peat, chairman of Alieopp's brewery, is treasurer. The Colonel is known as a "wet," and his mission was to find out all about prohibition in the U.S-A. In his report he «ays:—"l have come away with two c]ear. generally-held opinions: '■(1| That on experience to da:-. :' the mivisur-? were put to the •■ :■■ would be retained. ■'(■-) That its effect has uni ■''}' beon to increase general indu=lr.. . efli" ciency."' Colonel Wiley also says: -'There i= no doubt that the nation as a whole haa benefited enormously. . . following the abolition of the saloon." Amongst the benefits he names are: "More savings to be spent on the amenities ot i life, leae crime (the widespread closing |of gaols proves this), less disease, better food, clothing, and houses.' . It is not eunprising that since then he has been bitterly attacked by Sir W. H. Peat, treasurer above-mentioned. It' 6 curious, too, that the British Commonwealth Cnion now declares Colonel Wiley's report "out of print." However, eminent publicists like .Sir John Foster Fraser and Mr. Harold Spender are also on record a≤ to the beneficial results of prohibition, and nothing Allsopp's do will prevent t!ie spread of the truth.— X.Z.
