THE CITY PARTNERSHIP.
CHANCE FOR TAMAKI WEST. BENEFITS OF AMALGAMATION. The question of Tamaki West amalgamating with the city was considered at a meeting of ratepayers at St. Heller's Bay last evening, when the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. J. H. Gunson, reviewed the position. Mr. Gunson explained that he was present on the invitation of the Road Board. The City Council made no promises as to work that would be carried out in districts that amalgamated, but he pointed out that already the initial work in connection with a drainage scheme for Point Chevalier, the latest partner, had been begun. He could give no undertaking as to when the tramways would be extended to Tamaki West. There were, he considered, at least four other districts that had prior claims, and these would be satisfied first, whether Tamaki West amalgamated or-not. Dealing with the present position in the district, Mr. Gunson said that taking into consideration the works authorised for the coming year the rate at West Tamaki would he 3/10 as against :l '« in the city. The finances were good, but many works required to be done. There was, for example, no proper drainage system. That was a matter that would receive attention from the city council if the area was joined up.
