The Christmas tourney under the auspices "a" a very inr.ee attendanPe of the public, and Wβ Kxcellency Lore Jelllcw was an Interested spectator n£ live mnn cur bouts nnd the professional bout between M. Rutherford (Sydney) and Bert Jarvis (Adelaide) for a purse of £200. Among the amateur bouts special Interest attached to that between the bantams. ( . McCarthy ■ nnd .T. Whittome, who have for n conEidernble Ume been close rivals, nnd are boxers of more skill and experience thnn Is usual among amateurs. Both lad.« went to their task briskly, and made the pace a fast one. using both hands skilfully in lively exchanges. McCarthy was the more, oppressive throughout, and trained a lead with fast left hooks to the face that steadied Whlttome, nnd frequently set him on the defensive, when he used his feet effectively to escape awkward corners. While taking punishment from both bauds, Whlttome nlgn scored with left t 0 the fact, and occasionally right uppevruts to both face nnd body, iliat kept McCarthy away at times in the first three rounds. As the Ibout proceeded McCarthy's aggressiveness nnd well-placed left hooks, varied by a telling right uppercut, wore Whlttome down ti.nd he Tightly got the verdict on points at the end of the six rounds. The mosUopnlar of the other amateur bouts ■was a lively set-to between L. Dlgnan aiid B. Nelson in the featherweight clats, in which eaci led in turn, but It was evened up to a draw in the sixth round, when N-elson finished strongly. The professional contest between Rutherford and Jarvis went thirteen rounds, when Jarvis was disqualified for Jiltting low. 'i'here was at times some clever boxing in the preceding twelve rounds, when Jarvis ; was concerned chiefly in blocking and tiuck- . lnc Rutherford's fast left Jabs, and himself lauded to the head at times with his Jeft, while Rutherford scored points with Ills right to the body all the time, and engineered to use his advantage In reach to wear his opponent down. After they ifcad warmed up in the first three rounds, with Jarvis making the Sydney man miss a lot with his left, Jarvis, who had taken a number of light body blows from Rutherford's right in clinches, scored clean lilts to the face and body and left and right in the fourth. Neither man was able to get there with any power in the three succeeding rounds, though both scored with light blqws, Jarvis connecting to the face with his left, and Rutherford getting his right to the body, and once landing an uppercut to the head as Jarvis came in. Rutherford was looking for a chance to uppercut Jarvis coming In during the next three rounds, and took some lefta to the face, but he could not land it, and kept the count even with light body blows in the clinches. A change marked the opening of the thirteenth round when Jarvis swung low with both hands, and landed below the belt He was cautioned, but repeated the low hitting, and when he had done this a third . time, despite the latitude allowed, he was disqualified, and a verdict given for Rutherford. The tournament will be continued tomorrow night at the Town Hall, when J. Kecnan will contest the lightweight professional championship of New Zealand with Gus Venn, the holder, nnd a 10-round dieavywelght bout for £200 between Les Gleeson and Jack Hecnay will be put on, with a boxing exhibition by the Whittle luldgets, and probably an amateur β-round bout.
