FIREMEN AND COOK.
DISPUTE ON MOANA. DELAYS STEAMER'S DEPARTURE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.). CIIRISTOHURCH, Thursday. The Moana was ready to sail from Lyttelton for Wellington "at 8.30 p.m.. but the firemen refused to go to sea unless the chief cook was dismissed. It appears that some of the firemen went on board the vessel after 6 p.m. and expected their tea. The chief cook refused to allow them to be served, as the tea hour was five o'clock. The captain was then informed by the firemen that they would not sail with the chief cook on board. The secretary of the Lyttelton branch of the Seamen's Union was summoned, and also the Lyttelton manager of the Union Company, and the company's marine superintendent. A conference was held on board. It >vas pointed out that tbe cook could not be summarily dismissed, as he was entitled to 24 hours' notice. The 'Sremen finally agreed to sail on condition that tiie cook left Jhe ship at Wellington to-morrow, and the cook was accordingly g'ven 24 hours' notice. The Moana sailed at 11 p.m.
