EXPORT OF POTATOES.

THE AUSTRALIAN EMBARGO,

CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. A deputation from the Potato Growers' Association waited upon the Prime Minister to-day with a request that steps be taken to have the Australian embargo lifted on the importation of New Zealand potatoes. It was pointed out that the crop was a good one, and practically free from disease. There was a surplus, and all the growers wanted was a fair price. The market value of £3 10/- to £4 did not leave a profit.

Mr. Massey said it was impossible to avoid loss at £3 10/-. There had been several communications, unsuccessfully B ?J ar ' ? vith the A »BtraUan Government, although it had been urged that the New Zealand crop was very free from disease, and a thorough inspection was suggested. The present quarantine conditions made exportation to Australia impossible. Ho would try again, for it was as important to Australia as to New Zealand, and if nothing could be done he was prepared to try Honolulu, San Francisco, and even Vancouver. He believed there was a market there. He would instruct the Department to ascertain if potatoes could be .placed there at a reasonable rate of freight.
