Wheelwright was arrested on tho Remuera when she arrived in port this morning, by Detective Gourley, one a charge of assaulting the second Bteward, Charles T. Davenport. The facts appear to be thnt Wheelwright , was wiping some knives when the second steward approached and told him to get on with his work and not to shoulder it on to others. In reply to this Wheelwright is alleged to have used some offensive language, whereupon Davenport, who had turned away, came back, shaped up to the other with the intention of giving him'a punch, and, according to witness, did so. Wheelwright still had the tablo knives in his hand, and brought them down on the former's head, inflicting several cuts. The second steward again came at him, and this time received a cut on the left side of the neck, which ended the meleo to tho extent that tho second steward asked the other to- come on deck and fight like a man. The challenge was not taken up, and the sequel will take place in the Magistrate's Court on Monday, when Wheelwright will be charged with assaulting the second steward by cutting i him on the head and neck. The second steward states he was incapacitated for five days. The cuts have now all healed. , :,
