FIRE ON A STEAMER.

' - A fire oceurreel last evening in So. 4 s h-old 01 the New Zealand Shipping Com- '• pany's liner Ruapehu. now discharging • cargo at Lyttelton. The men who had ; been discharging the vessel, on their return from tea at about six o'clock, noticed smoke issuing from the hold. In [ it were stowed tiles interlaid with straw i I and barrels of soda. The fire started in : . the straw, but it is not known how iti originated. The men ran a lead of hose into the hold, and in about half-an-hour's time had the outbreak subdued. It is , yet too soon to give an estimate of the total damage.
