THOROUGHLY BAD.
THIEF AND GAOL-BREAKER. (By Telegraph.—iPres-s Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. " You are a troublesome man, and, I 'believe, a thoroughly bad man," stated Mr. Justice Herdman in passing sentence on William Nicolai Clausen, alias Johnston. The prisoner had pleaded guilty to breaking, entering, and theft, and to being an incorrigible rogue, in that he escaped from the I _parua prison.
" This is the second time you have escaped from gaol," said his Honor. " In the interests of the public and of the country it is right that you should go to gaol for some time. You have already had a year added to a five years' sentence for escaping from gaol. At the expiration of those six years you will commence to serve the sentence I now 'impose. You are sentenced to three years' hard labour on the first charge, and a conviction will -be recorded on the second.
