HOSPITAL FOR MATAMATA.
RESIDENT'S GENEROUS* GIFT. PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION RAISED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. The Waikato Hospital Board was notified yesterday of a donation by Mr. Benjamin Browne, a resident of Matamata, of three and a-quarter acres of land at Mafcamtffte as a site for a maternity home and casualty ward, together with a sum of £500 towards the erection of the necessary buildings. This was conditional on a further £500 being subscribed by the residents of Matamata. The letter stated that a hospital committee had 'been formed, and had collected £702 for tlie purpose, and this amount would in all probability be increased. The committee intimated that it was prepared' to transfer the land and £1/200 to the board immediately, if that body would put the work in hand at once. It wa-s pointed out that the value of the land would bring the contribution to £1,700, which, with the Government subsidy of 24/ in the pound, would make available 'a sum of £3.'2o>G.
The matter was referred to the House and Finance Committee for a report, members speaking in appreciative terms of the generous gift of Mr. Browne, and the public spiritedness of the residents of Matamata who, it was said, had set an example to the whole district.
It was decided to do everything possible to meet the needs of Matamata in the direction indicated.
