NORTHERN TRAGEDY.
MAORI FOUND DEAD. BODY IK A DITCH. ALLEGED RESULT OF QTJA__u NATIVE IN CUSTODY. Information was received by the Ancfc. land police yesterday of a tragedy ia jj, far North surrounded by circumstaiicti of grave suspicion. Last Saturday a|native named MeiHegn, aged about 25, living in the Awamii dj* trict, was reported to be missing, and it is alleged that in the course of the _. !he quarrelled with another native, who 1 struck him on the head. Whether er not there was any actual witness of the affair is not yet known, but apparently nothing was seen again of the injured man afterthe quarrel. On Wednesday the matter was reported to the police, and i search was made for the missing i with the result that his 'body was found lying in a ditch in about fifteen inthej of water some 20 chains from the eeene of the quarrel.
The other native alleged to have beta concerned in the quarrel has been arrested 'by Constable Calwell, of KaiUia, •and arrangements have been made for ithe holding of an inquest.
[ Meantime, the Auckland police hare notified Sub-Inspector Cassells, of Whigarel, who will probably proceed North to take charge of the investigation of til affair.
