CRUELTY TO A HORSE.
A case came''before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., yesterday, afternoon, at the Magistrate's Court, laid by H. Alder, Inspector for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Mr. C. E. Matthews), against J. Jones, for cruelty to a 'horse. Evidence was given to prove that defendant, who denied the charge, struck the horse on the mouth a severe blow; also that he was about to repeat the blow when he was prevented by one of the witnesses.
At this stage a woman in the body of the Court interjected, " It's a lie!" Being told to remain quiet, she shouted hysterically, "I am his wife; I have a right to take 'his part." A constable was then instructed to remove the lady to the witnesses' room.
His Worship said to defendant: "You have been to the war; are your nerves upset?" "Yes, your Worship; I have had a nervous breakdown since my return. I was gassed in France."
'Mr. Poynto* remarked that might have bad something to do with defendant's action; but he 'had no right to Strike the horse in the mouth. A fine of 40/ was imposed. Costs totalling £6 11/ were granted. Defendant was allowed one month in which to pay the amount.
