EXTENSION OF TRAMWAYS.
ARRIVAL OF MATERIAL. WORKS IN PROGRESS. FUTURE POLICY OUTLINED. In course of conversation regarding •worEs contemplated by the City Council in connection with the extension of tramways, the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gnnson, remarked that considering the council had only acquired the. service eight months ago, he thought good progress had been made. Work -was proceeding in the matter of the duplication of the lines on the Grey Lynn line. The rails for the new lines up Anzac Avenue to connect with Symonde Street, hay« arrived and that work will be started in about a couple of months' time. That is to he a double line, the same as Symond* Street. A further 700 tons of rails are on order for relaying the lines in ManuKau Road, in connection -with the concreting now being done on that thoroughfare, and also for the duplication of the lines in Dominion Road. The rails for the latter work were only recently ordered, and it will therefore b* some coneiderable time .before they com ,, to hand. It ie hoped, however, the raih will arrive in time to enable Dominion Road duplication to be undertaken ie soon as Anzac Avenue is done. The council has not lost much time, seeing; that 1000 tons of raile have been ordered within eight months, and 300 tone have already been landes, as they were shipped promptly. As to future extensions of the tram service., Mr. Gunson said: "The council has many claims to coneider within ttu present city area, and ac far as outsid? districts, it is for the local body interested to move in the first place. Of course, from any borough or district where the council holds concessions at application for extension of the service will sp considered on a business basis and terms will be submitted if desired. From the council's point of view it i» only reasonable that the question of tramway extensions must be considered from the point of view of the benefit o"f Auckland as a whole. Naturally the city is interested in the progress of the whole of the surrounding districts, and no doubt that progress will bx increased if the tramway service ie extended further outside the boundaries ol the city proper."
