The American transport Powhatan, 3000 tons, which on the ISth was reported by wireless to be in distress with her boiler rooms full of water, has been rescued after being adrift for six days in the Atlantic. There were 500 persons on board. Eight lives were lost when one of the boats engaged in rescuing the passengers, from the steamer Jforthern Pacific, was capsized. The "Powhatan was 500 miles from New York when she got into difficulties. The steamer Cedric took off 271 of the passengers. There was a heavy sea at the time, and when it calmed down other steamo* took the transport in tow and brought her safely to port.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
