POLICE COURT.
_ • (Before Mr. J. E. Wilson, S.M.) PEEPING TOM. There is a house at Devonport that, stands far back from the road. It is away from the avenues of heavy traffic,: tout "a suspicion has been lurking- in the minds of its occupants, who include, by ; the way, several young ladies, that somebody has been making a practice of wandering about the grounds at n'ght. Somebody was, and he was a young fellow of 22, named William Richard Harrison. The other night, one of the young ladies has just finished undressing, and before retiring she put up the blind to let some cool air into her room. There he was, the figure of a man outside the ■window, and the dim outline of ; a hat hanging on the gate-post. The young lady was badly frightened, and gave the alarm. Meanwhile the male figure moved rapidly away, removed the hat from the gate-post, and was gone. Bet in the morning there was found in the garden beneath the window a handkerchief with a mans name on the corner. This handkerchief was Jianded over to the police, and they made a point of interviewing the young man Harrison. As a consequence the youth was brought into the Police Court this morning and described. according tc law as a rogue and a vagabond, and charged with being by night.on private property without lawful excuse. Be sides all this Sub-Inspector Wohlmanr said he was a Peeping Ton£ who was ir the hanit of••going.,along-"distance out of his homeward way to peep into thesi girls' bedrooms, and had succeeded h frightening them greatly. 'What'do you say. Explain yourself,' demanded the Magistrate. **I don't think I have anything: tt say," said the young fellow. 'He was sentenced to a month witl hard labour. A BEGGAR'S £42. Accused of begging alms in the street, one, Walter Frank Freestone (54), an Englishman, told a yarn of holidays in the cityj-a job to go to in the country and no cash to pay his fare. But that tale carried no conviction, for the police had found a Savings Bank book on him with a credit balance of £42 in it. Freestone had -been observed to accost eight men in Victoria - Street, so a policeman had set himself in the man's way, and was immediately asked for the fprice oi a "binder." Instead of the "binder" he was given free lodging for the night Freestone protested that he did not even have "a couple o' bob" in the bank He denied absolutely that he. had a heavy balance there, and when the polici and the Magistrate perused the book anc told him what the balance was he was all astonishment. He could not thinl who had put- the cash there, or when : but he was particularly careful to saj i that he knew nothing of it. The theory held in Court was that ' as the man had been on service, t)he £4: . odd was his gratuity money, but Mr . Wilson had no hesitation about savin) ! that he did not believe Freestone's ex pressed ignorance. However, prisone ; was told to make haste and get away t> >. his job in the Waikato, and was ordere< • to come up for sentence if called withii three months. REMANDS.
