NEWSPRINT SHORTAGE
SUPPLIES FROM CANADA. SO PROHIBITION OF EXPORT. HAND" TO MOUTH STOCKS. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 8.45 a.m.) OTTAWA, January 5. ! Au official denial is given to the re- ~ >oit that the Government contemplated mtirely prohibiting the export of news- , print paper. The Canadian newspapers iise 20 per cent of the output, and the . remaining 80 p<-i' cent, must be o.i.v-rtot 1 or the industry will close down. The Government's only'object ,n interfering is to see that the Canadian papers get fair supplies as a first call. They will not interfere with the balance. There is reason to believe that the Pacific Coast mills will continue supplying Australasia this year subitantiaily on the same basis as last year, but publishers everywhere realise that prices are rising with acute scarcity, and all etreks have been wiped ««it, even the lichcst newspapers having to be content with hand to mouth supplies. C.erta'nly i there is no hope of Australasia getting; more paper than she has been lec't-iving from Canada.—(Rcuter.)
