THE LEYS INSTITUTE.

DEMAND FOR _an_BGE~EHT. . The Levs Institute at Ponsonby. which provides citizens with a library, a "•vmnasium, and lecture rooms, in addi- ■ tion to facilities for taking advantage , of this equipment for mental ami physical improvement and recreation, has become so popular, and its library has grown so rapidly that its accommo- . nation is now overtaxed, and a proposal for extension of the buildings and equipment at a. cost of £3000 was put before the City Council last night. Mr. T. VV. Levs and Mr W. Cecil Leys, trustees under the wiU of the late Mr. William Levs, wrote stating that they proposed to! apply to the Supreme Court for; power to expend a sum not exceeding £ 1500 from the trust for extension of buildings, and if this was granted Mr. T. W. Leys would augment the sum authorised by a contribution equivalent to the amount contributed by the trust. The trustees further stated that "hitherto any deficiency arising in connection with "the maintenance and equipment of the Institute has been wholly defrayed by Mr. T. W. Leys. The trusj tees consider that the estate of the late I Mr. William Leys can now make a larger contribution to these objects." They therefore propose to ask the Court for authority to pay out of the annual income a sum not exceeding £500 a year to support the expenses of the Institute, "such authority to be a discretionary one, and liable to be varied, but noi» exceeded by the trustees from time to time in accordance with the needs of the Institute cud the sufficiency of the income from the estate to fulfil all the obligations imposed by the terms of the will of the late William Leys. It would; also be entirely without prejudice to the agreement entered into by the trustees with the City Council dated May 26, 1004." The trustees requested the cooperation of the City Council, in which the Institute has been vested, in their application to the Supreme Court for the r proposed variation of the terms of the trust. : The Deputy-Mayor (Mr. A. J. Entri- ' can) stated that the citizens took a • j great pride in the Leys Institute, which -1 had been a great benefit to many of the • I citizens, and he was sure the " Council - would accord the trustees the heartiest support in their application to the e j Supreme Court to e lable the Institute to <• be enlarged. (Hear, hear.) t The communication was referred to the e Finance and Legal Committee for report e j at next meeting.
