SCHOOLS' WATER SLTPLY. O'COXNKLL STREKT rROTOSAI. The ordinary meeting of the Auckland City Council was held yesterday evening, there lieing present the Deputy-Mayor (Mr. A. J. In answer to a suggestion from the St. John's College Trust Board that it was willlng to negotiate for transfer to the Council of about fifteen acres In Surrey Crescent (Grey Lynn), in order to increase the area available tliere adjoining the Council's property for workmen's homes, the Council decided to reply that it had ample vacant land for tlie workmen's homes scheme without any addition. An inquiry was made on behalf of the British Red Cross and Order of St. John It the Council wouftl allow the free use or Kllbryde Ilouse, In Parnell Tark, for the establishment of a home for military patients of the Auckland district who aro sutTerlng from permanent spinal complaints. The Council decided to reply that as the building was held by the Auckland Hospital Board, subject to twelve months' notice, the Council was not In a position to accede to any request on the lines Indicated by the inquiry. XOT ECONOMICAL. The Mount Albert Borough Council drew attention to the fact that it had tarred and sanded portion of the main road at Kingsland and Morningside between the kerb and the tram lines, and asked the City Council to similarly treat the roadway between the tram lines. On this request the tramways manager reported that it was against practice, and not considered economical to tar and sand the macadam between the tram lines. The Council agreed with the tramway* manager's views. FOR CITY SCHOOLS ONLY. A request from the Education Board that the question of the water supply to schools be reconsidered, with a view to extending the present concession to include sanitary services, was met by a recommendation from the Public Services Committee on the point, which had been raised by Councillor Patterson. The Committee recommended that the by-laws be altered to enable the city schools to get the full benefit of the 500 gallons per head per annum allowed free by the inclusion In that concession or water used in the lavatories, and that the altered by-laws be made operative forthwith. A suggestion by Councillor Tatterson that the matter be made retrospective was overruled. PROJECTED TENNIS COURTS. The Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, which has been in negotiation with the City Council to have several courts laid out on portion of the Domain in Stanley Street at an estimated cost of £1200. approached the Council with a request that the term, of the agreement made in 1915 on the subject be made somewhat lighter, in view of the first cost proving heavier than was anticipated. They suggested that the Council remit the rent for the first year, charge ten guineas per annum for the two successive yeaTS, and £2 _/ per annum thereafter, with a provision that the Association keep the lawns in proper order. The applicants pointed out that the annual cost to the Association of keeping the courts properly would be between £200 and f3OO. The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee for report' O'CONNELL STREET PROPOSAL. The proposal to widen O'Connell Strcei by 33ft by taking a lift strip on the eastern side, which the owners offered at a compensation assessed at about £5000 above the icost to the' Council (£2300) of doing the ; work, was reported on by the Public Works Committee. The Committee recommended that the Council accept dedication j without compensation, but perform the j work of pulling down such portions ot | buildings as might be necessary, walling up the remainder to make them tenantable, and properly forming and laying ont the road as widened, and that the Council apply for an Order-ln-Councll exempting the street from section 117 of the Public Works Act. The effect of the last proposal, the Engineer pointed out, would be to enable the owners to subdivide the property into allotments facing O'Connell Street, which they could not do without t_e Order-in-Council.
