AT LIVERYMEN'S EXPENSE. ALLEGED THEFT OF HORSES. The thefts of two livery stable turnouts in the course of six weeks were charged against a young man, Norman Selwyn Connelly (29), before Mr. J. E. Wilson, S.M., yesterday. The story of the evidence was that on August 14 Connelly went to Dunsmuir's stables at Pukekohe a horee to ride to Buckland to see a relative, arranging for payment on his return. He rode, instead, to Fapakura, and there sold the horse, saddle, bridle, and epurs, which the stable-keeper valued at about £11 15/, to Duncan Bcattie for £4 10/. He told a tale about having finished a contract at Onewhero, and being on his way to town to collect his cash, stating that he had had to ride to Papakura to get the train (on account of the curtailed service), and that now the horse was no more use to him. He met a remark about the ownership of the horse by offering to go to make the sale before the local constable. He did come on to town, for on October 2 he hired a horse and gig at Clements' stable, in Lome Street, ostensibly to go to the Westfield stock sale, where he said he was selling stock, and an hour later he sold the turnout as it stood for £20 to Robert Draper, a hawker, who got it for a third of the value put on it by the owner. After evidence to this effect had been given, Connelly being identified in each case as the hirer and the seller of the chattels, accused, who pleaded "Not iruilty," was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. On a further ch.irpe of having obtained a bicycle at Hamilton by false pretences, he was remanded to appear at Hamilton.
