NORTH MAIN LINE.
PROGRESSING APACE. IMPROVED CONDITIONS FOR MEN. A report regarding the progress of the work on the North Auckland Main Trunk line at the Waiotira-Waikiekie section, prepared by the president of the Railway League (Mr. P. E. Cheat), states that the earthwork between the 17-mile peg at Tauaroa and Waiotira is nearly completed. Temporary trestle work has been constructed at a big filling to enable the engine and trucks to bring up material. Permanent rails are now- laid within a quarter of a mile of the Waiotira station, and the earthwork between Waiotira and Waikiekie is going ahead at a great rate. Tie engine should he at the railhead, 1015 miles from Auckland, shortly. About 100 men are employed, and the Waikiekie tunnel is being worked with a full staff. Three shifts are working, and the final concrete lining has been started. About 20 men are employed on the Tokatahoe tunnel, which is being pierced at both ends. Greater progress is now being made than for yeara past, and McCarroll's Gap itf.vould soon be reached.
Better provision has been made for the workers, wooden huts, cookhouses, and changehouses having been erected at the tunnels. The Waiotira station is being built, and will he an important junction in the future Main. Trunk system.
