ELAM ART SCHOOL.
iTo the Editor.) Sir. —I notice that the Board of Governors of Christ's College, Christehurch, is to give place for the first time to a control on which the Christ's College Old Boys' Association is to have direct representation. In fact this august and conservative hody has now been brought more under public control. To accomplish this direct legislative action was needed. Auckland possesses an institution, the Elam School of Art, which, although supported chiefly by State grants, is governed by a Board constituted on archaic and non-representative principles. It is time that some move should be made to bring this institution more in line, with the other educational schools of its kind in New Zealand. Auckland holds an unenviable reputation in the matter of art and crafts as compared with the other three cities, and we can nevjr look for an improvement until our principal school of fine arts is brought under democratic control. If it is necessary to accomplish this, as in the case of tho old established and conservative organism, Christ's College, to pass special legislation, surely one of the local members could introduce a bill which would place matters in the hands of the people, who pay the taxes by means of which the school is supported. I am, etc., STUDENT.
