Following upon the precedent set dtir- ' tug the epidemic, a further " Cleaning-up Week " is to be held in Auckland as from September Ist. the-object being to ' enable the citizens to have a general ! cleansing and titivating, thereby anti- ' eipating the propagation period of rats. The clean-up is being made at the in . stance of the Public Health Department, and the Works Committee of the City Council has acquiesced in the suggestion. Tiie idea is for the city to remove rubbish which in the ordinary way would r be outside the scope of the sanitary sci- . vice. Announcing its intentions by advertisement, the City Council states that I additional services will be available and , that citizens are specially requested . thoroughly to .lean up their premises I and arrange for all rubbish, tins, or ! other matter which may harbour rats to be placed ready for removal by Hie f Council carts on the day when the cole lection is usually made.
Extracts from Section 100 of the bylaws arc ipioted. pointing out obligations, pains and penalties upon citizens in respect of the clearing up of materials which provide harbourage for rats, of leaving nourishment for rats exposed, of failing to root out nests and burrows, ni:d of general anti-rodent sanitary arrangements.
