MR. FISHER'S OPPONENT.
ARTHUR HENDERSON TO STAND LONDON, August 24. Mr. Arthur Henderson, former leader of the Labour party and at one time o member of the War Cabinet, who was defeated at the general elections, is opposing Mr. F. M. B. Fisher, former New Zealand Minister of Customs, who is contesting the Widnes by-electien in the Unionist interest. Mr. Henderson, in a speech, referred to his visit to Russia in 1917. The Cabinet, he said, authorised him to replace the Ambassador at Petrograd at a salary of £8000 a year. He ascertained that the Cabinet's dissatisfaction with the Ambassador. Sir George Buchanan, was due to a misapprehension. Therefore he refused to supersede the Ambassador, and- subsequently resigned from the Cabinet, giving up a salary of £5000 a year rather.- than sacrifice his principles"—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
