CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP.
WON BY CAPABLANCA. LONDON, August 24. Capablanca won the international chess tournament at Hastings, with 10* points. Kostich, the Serbian player, was second with 9* points. Capablanca won all his games with tho exception of one, in which he drew with Kostich.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) (Received 9.45 a.m.) LONDON,»August 24. Capablanca won twenty-seven out ot thirty-live simultaneous games at Hastings, drew seven, and lost one.—(A and N.Z. Cable.) Jose R. Capablanca was born on 19th November, ISSS. in Cuba. He showed youthful precocity, and good games won by him when still a boy have appeared in print. He won the chess championship of Cuba when he was sixteen years of age. A part of his education" was carried out at one of the Cnited States universities. In IDO9 ho engaged Marshal! in a match, and administered a crushing defeat by 8 games to 1, with 14 draws. His tournament successes are:—Second at New York, 1911; first at San Sebastian. 1911; first at New York. 1913; second at Havana, 19111. His victory at San Sebastian placed him in the front rank of chess masters. He challenged Laskcr to play a match for I the world's cliampionship, but Laskcr has refused to play hint. His tours in the United "states yielded results which are positively amazing. For instance, on one tour he played 720 games, winning 680, losing 14, and drawing 20, truly an astounding record; and he has 6incc accomplished such performances against the best- clubs in England and the Continent a.s to gain him a reputation as the first living exponent of Binamjaneoufl displays,
