When the police visited thr house ~f Valentine Brusbmeyer, formerly a butcher's assistant, of St. Jumps' Mews St Tohn's Wood, who died i,, hospital the folloWlnß «my from the effects of taking spirits of salts, they found that his family were suf ferine from lack of nourishment, and that there was neither food nor money in the house, says the "Dn!l.v Chronicle." When the mother was asked where the children's Sunday dinner was she admitted that there was none, hut that the children had a kind aunt who might give them sompthins to eat. Krushmeyer was compelled to jrive up Ills occupation owing to ill-health, and to 'find work in a gas mask factory in !Ii K hKate. This closed down after ihe armistice. and since then he was unable to find employment. Sometimes his wife earned v £l a week, which was made to pay the rent and to support the husband and wife and fiMo children. Eventually rSrushmeyer became depressed and swallowed spirits ot salts. The Marylobone coroner said t!;e case was a pathetic one. and that he had communicated with the Charity Organisation Society, who, however, hart not sont a representative to the court. He hoped th.lt one of the many benevolent societies would do something for this unfortunate for the case appeared to be a genuine one.
