SHOP ASSISTANTS.
IT.. Mie Killior.l f"ir, — May I through your columns make a protest at the way in which many of the la.lv assistants in the city shops treat lady" customers? It is not a rare thing to be treated in an entirely offhand manner, with no attempt at all at politeness. Recently purchasing some glovew in Quoen Street, tho .assistant wrapped them up and tossed them on the counter in a most disdainful manner — with no "thank you"—in fact she stalked off with an indifference amounting to insult. In sovc/al shops it is quite untinusal for the assistant to say '•Thank you," however polite one may be to her. What is the reason? The writer has had
considerable experience at Home (and in New Zealand) in the soft goods trade, and knows what it is to serve trying customers, but the treatment "lady" customers get here in Auckland would not be tolerated at Home, even in the provinces. I always make it a rule to be as clear and concise as possible when purchasing, and treat the assistants as ladies, but one gets a very poor return generally.—l am, etc., REASONABLE.
