FUTURE WARS.
(To the Editor.! Sir.—Assuming that Sir Joseph Ward's statement that war will 'be an impossibilitj' for the next 50 or 100 years is correct, why waste money at the present time for defence purposes? The youths trained now will be all over military age when war breaks out again. The money would be better spent on railway or road construction, giving access to Crown lands. Special settlements could be csta'bli.hed with these areas, instead of paying exorbitant prices to speculators and wealthy landholders. Tbe men who braved death to save the couutr}' would prosper upon land sold at a reasonable price. As Tegards present transactions, it is only a matter of time when the land will again become the property of the profiteer.— I am, etc., JOHN GLTNIVEW
