TRAM CAR SANITATION.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—l should like to draw public attention to the room for improvement as regards sanitation in our tram cars. Standing is allowed in every car, and strap-hanging is the consequence. Disease is sometimes imparted from the body by perspiration frequently noticeable in the bands.' Since filth has a splendid opportunity of remaining on the rough surface of the leather, I contend that these straphangers are carriers of disease. In most of the countries I have travelled precaution is taken against this danger. Porcelain grips are attached to every "hanger." and since it is impossible for germs to multiply or even exist on porcelain, by adopting this up-to-date method we are protecting public health. The outlay would not be greater than the cost ol" renewing the leather straps, say, every twelve months. —I am, etc., CLARENCE SLVEL.
