TRENTHAM ART UNION.
RESULT OF THE DRAWING. The full result of the Trcntham Dominion Scholarships' Art Union is published by advertisement in another column. Describing the procedure at the drawing the "Dominion" says: The butts of the tickets sold, come 750,000 in number, were contained in a huge barrel, seven feet in diameter. This barrel, with its load of tickets, weighed about five hundredweight. It was mounted on an axle, and could be spun by the united efforts of half a dozen men. A smaller barrel contained the prize numbers. One of these numbers was drawn, and a ticket was then drawn from the larger barrel. The two tickets gave the number of the prize and the corresponding winning ticket. Each butt drawn was returned to the large barrel after its number had been noted, so that every ticket had a chance of winning more than one prize. The Mayor, in "opening the proceedings, said that the art union had been instituted by Dr. Riddell with the object of providing funds fo r the education of soldiers' children. Dr. Riddell, who had worked very energetically to make the scheme a success, was not able to be present owing to ill-health. Mr. Malcolm Fraser, Government Statistician, and Captain Munro were present as ballot experts. The Hon. G. W. Russell expressed his appreciation of the good work that had been done in connection with the fund. lie had gladly granted a permit for this art union. Some people did not approve of the raising of money by such a method. If there were any such people present he was sure the committee would be ready to receive their direct contribu. tions to the fund. The money that had been raised was going to make a very great difference to hundreds of children by enabling them to obtain education that would mean the difference between success and failure in life. He congratulated the committee and all wno had assisted. The chairman of the committee (Mr. S. Kirkcaldic) announced through the Mayor at the close of the drawing that the net proceeds were in the neighbourhood of £35,000. The activities 6f the committee would cease on the payment of the proceeds to the trustees, who were Major-General Sir Alfred Robin, Colonel Potter, and Dr. Anderson (Director of Education). The trustees had agreed to act with a committee to be appointed to draw up a scheme for the allocation oi scholarships to soldiers' children, and the conditions under which the scholarships would be distributed.
