RAILWAY'S COAL.
STOCKS AT BEDROCK. MR. SEMPLE'S STATEMENTS REFUTED. MANAGER QUOTES FIGURES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. Interviewed regarding Mr. Semple'e allegations as to the sufficiency of coal etocks held by the Railway Department, Mr. R. W. McVilly, General Manager of Railways, stated that for the week ended July 12, the gross total held in all depots from Auckland to the Bluff was 8,350 tone; for the week ended July 19 it was 10,291 tons, and for the week ended July 26 8,900 tons. On July 12 there were only 130 tons at Paekakariki, and on Monday last 50 at Palmerston North, from which supplies were drawn for depots as far north as Taumarunui, and on one occasion the Napier and Wanganui line, ac far as Hawera, and even New Plymouth. Only 1,100 tons were held on Monday at Cross Creek, also drawn upon to replenish other depots, there were but 425 tons. Instead of 3,000 tons at Wellington, as asserted by Mr. Semple, there was only 500 tons. He wished the public to definitely understand that the coal etocks are s-et out in the etatement recently placed before the public. It was much to be regretted that statements should be made without first hand information.
