The King received deputations from the London County Council, Nonconformist Ministers, and the English Presbyterian Church. Ministers of each pre- . Bented an address to the King congratulating him upon the signing of peace, c The King, replying to the County Council, said: "It rests with us to build up a new world to replace the shattered fabric of the old world. The wakened consciousness of the nation demands new developments and the removal of many grave defects in the social system." In referring to housing he emphasised his earnest desire that nothing should be left undone to realise better ideals 'in home life. This alone was making possible real improvement in social con--1 ditions. He was also convinced that • there was nothing more essential to national prosperity and happiness than • education, true education, developing to • the fullest extent the spiritual, mental and physical potentialities of every member of the community.
