FORESHORE IMPROVEMENTS.
A TAKAPUNA SCHEME. APPROVED BY RATEPAYERS. The proposals of Mr. W. H. Hart, riding member for the Takapuna Riding of i the Waitemata County, to raise £13,000 < for the purposes of forming a beach road to connect all the bays from Milford to . Long Bay, and for metalling all the im- : portant side roads in the riding, was advanced a stage further at another enthusiastic meeting of ratepa3'ers from the locality concerned, at the Waitemata County Council Chambers last evening. Mr. R. Clark presided. Mr. Hart reviewed his proposals, em- ' phasising the advantages to be derived therefrom. He pointed out that it would mean shortening the distance from Milford to Dee]) Creek by one mile, and the giving of direct access to all the bays en route, so that a motor service could be run from Milford through to Deep Creek. The present route was not fitted for this us the side roads leading down to the beach averaged from one mile and a quarter to iwo miles in length. The proposed route hugged the j coast-line till the way. It would also 1 mean an easier grade in that there would be no portion steeper than one in sovenjtcen. He proposed that the expenditure lof loan should extend over ten years. I The Government, he understood, would ! support the scheme largely, therefore it i wouid not be necessary to lift the whole jof the UIS.OOO. lie 'estimated that in the event of this Government subsidy I being forthcoming, the rate would work I out at approximately one penny, which ! within four years should bo reduced by i improvements increasing the value of -properties affected. He proposed to put the scheme as a whole before the ratepayers. Another aspect which would be I "beneficial for ratepayers to consider in j connection with the scheme was the saving in metalling that would accrue from j the scheme. I The chairman said they were very much indebted to Mr. Hart for the I sound and feasible scheme he had sub- . mitted. They all fully realised that something should be done to open up the I foreshore. He instanced the great benei fits which such a scheme on a large : scale gave to tho marine suburbs in and . around Sydney. j A feeling of general satisfaction with j the scheme placed before them was cxj pressed by those present, and regret at I the absence from the meeting of -Mr. | Parr, M.P., who, it was gathered from •the remarks passed, is opposed to the scheme. A strong feature of the views expressed was tho desire of one and all —so satisfied wore they that it was a good one, ami it was the very thing they wanted—to have it placed before the Council at an early date. Those present resolved to enlighten ratepayers in the area affected as far as possible. Mr. .1. Knight said the scheme was a good one, and deserved tho hearty support of all those who bad the advancement of the district at heart. He moved ), that .Mr. Hart's scheme be carried through as a whole. j Mr. SlyhVld, in seconding, strongly :: supported the scheme. Tt now remains for Mr. Hart to first ,] obtain the sanction of the Council before [ submitting it finally at a poll of rate- • I payers. |j The next meeting to be addressed by Mr. Hart will be at Long Bay. »j THE LOAN.
