PRISONER ESCAPES
FROM MAIN TRUNK EXPRESS. STILL AT LIBERTY. A prisoner named Michael MeCann alias William Longley, escaped from custody yesterday while being taken to Feilding in the Main Trunk express. He had not been recaptured up to the tirs<; the "Star" went to press to-day. The prisoner was placed on the express, on Monday night in charge of a constable, and apparently managed to get off the train at Pokako, near Raurimu, af about the highest point on the Main Trunk line. MleCann was sentenced to two years' reformative treatment r.c Auckland for a series of thefts, of which he was eon : victed about three weeks ago. He was being sent South because he was suspected of having some connection with a thef*at Kimbolton. MeCann is 30 years of age, about sft sin in height, and of strong build. His complexion is dark, and he wears a small dark moustache. When h» left Auckland he wore a large overcoat of a dark grey colour, blue coat, vest and trousers, dark grey soft felt hat, and wellworn black boots. He was without collaj or tie. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent > HAMILTON, this day. A prisoner named James Claude Irwin escaped from Waikeria Prison Camp last night, riding away on a hack taken from a farm dairy. A man answering his description was seen going in the direction of Kawhi'a.
