Canzonet showed up momentarily in front, but when they settled down Elate and Independence were showing the way from Canzonet, with Pierrot beading a bunched lot, the last of which was Cadet, Independence and Elate showed the way across the top, two lengths in front of Canzonet, which had Pierrot on its quarters, the most prominent of the others being General Step—en. Turning for 'home, lndependeuce had Elate beaten, and was first to straighten up for the run to the judge. At the distance Pierrot, General Stephen, and Rang! Aroha came through with well-sustained runs, and Pierrot, las-ting the longest, got the verdict by three-quarters of a length from General Stephen, with Rang! Aroha half-a-length away, third. Te Ongo led Waimai, Tenacious and Troublesome over the first hurdle, and there ■was no charnge at the second obstacle. I Going up the hill Waimai went into the '■ I lead, followed by Tenacious, Troublesome, Master Lupin and Te Ongo. and in this order they came down the hill to the wall entering the course. Waimai led over the sod bank of the water jump, with Master Lupin and Troublesome almost on terms, with Tenacious, Te Ongo, Arlington and : Bore following in that order. Waimai led over the stove wall, and the pace near the old water jump, at which Troublesome i nearly came down and lost his rider. This left Waimai and Master Lupin clear of ' Tenacious and Te Ongo, and there was no change in the order along the back and over the bill. Master Lupin then headed Waimai and led him slightly over the sod wail and double, and Te Ongo ran into third i place 100 yards behind the leader and appeared to be closing up when he stopped at the old water jump and interfered with I Tenacious, who lost some ground. This left Master Lupin and Waimai with a still I more commanding lead, and going up the • hill he drew light away, forcing the pace on i the favourite. The latter, however, made up ground coming down the hill, and jumping, the two fences had got within a few I lengths of the leader, who was going easily.
