WAIKATO ITEMS.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, this day. The death occurred in the Waikato Hospital thie morning of Charles Tipping, who was one % of the original milltary settlers in Hamilton, having arrived here on August 14th, 1864, wita the first draft of the 4tn Waikato Militia. For several years he was »• member of the Hamilton Borough Council and other bodies, always manifesting: a keen interest :n matters pertaining to" the progress of the district. He was 74 and unmarried. A meeting of the Coursing Club reported that only eight hares were left out of a consignment of 52 from Canterbury, representing a loss to the club of £3G. It is believed that escapes were due to defective netting of the enclosure. It was necessary now to abandon,the meeting fixed for June 7th. The club decided to hold a Challenge Stake on June 26, 27, and 2S. At the Magistrate's Court, Mr. M. Fraser, contractor, Huntly, sued the Waikato Shipping Co. for fil3 10/ for alleged damages w * temporary bridge structure over the Waikato River at Xgaruawahia. B was contended that the steamer Tanera took the side channel instead of the fairway, and struck the structure.. After hearing- evidence Mr. Young, S.H., gave judgment for the defendant, holding that the captain was quite justified in taking the side passage. Xo negligence had ..een shown, and proper care had been taken. The Waikato Central Saleyards Coaccepted a tender in the vicinity of £6,000 for the erection of up-to-date I yards at Frankton-
