THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
AN INEFFECTIVE POLL. (By Telegraph.-own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. A deputation representing those in favour of fl .Saturday half-holiday I waited upon the Mayor, Mr. Donaldson,! this afternoon, and requested that the! recent poll taken at the muueipal elections (which resulted in favour of Saturday by a large majority) be given effect to. Representatives of the Wednesday half-holiday were al.-o present. Ihose in favour of Saturday contended i that the will of fhe people should be 1 given effect to in face or tiie result ot the poll. In reply, the Mayor pointed out thai at the statutory meeting of the Council, held in January. Wednesday was carried i as the half-holiday for this year ana was duly gazetted. The* subsequent poll was not taken under the provisions ot thr Shops and Offices Act, but merely to ascertain the wishes of electors in the matter as a guide for the Council in future. He also quoted the borougil solicitor's opinion to the effect that as section 17 of the Shops and Offices Act (which provided that a requisition ot one-tentli of tlie. elector* should be submitted when seeking to fix a.day other than that already provided for) had net LTru ™ ra P lio " with, the Wednesday half holiday, as fixed by the Council, must stand until January next.
