JEWEL THEFT RECALLED.
CRIMINALS RE-ARRESTED. LOXDON, May 28. The two men, Theophilus James Metealfe and Frank Milton (or Middleton), concerned in a sensational theft of jewels from the Carlton Hotel in 1017, together with Florrie Middleton, a sister of Milton, were arrested at the Xaval and Military Hotel at South Kensington on a charge of being there for an unlawful purpose.— (A. and X.Z. Cable.) Metoalf and Milton wore charged with a particularly impudent theft of jewellery from a showcase at the Carlton Hotel in September, 1017. During the trial it was asserted that the two accused had committed a series of larcenies from shops and hotels in London, extending over a period of six months. The charges related to property of a total value of from £7.000 to" £8,000, almost all of it being jewellery. Metcalf was a man of means, and Milton was described as his secretary. After entering a plea of not guilty, Milton admitted having taken the jewellery from the Carlton Hotel, and stated that his action was due to his addiction to drink and drugs. Metcalf denied ai! knowledge of the thefts. He stated that two articles jof jewellery which he had given away I had been , received from Milton, who had been given money to buy them. Milton, who was found guilty of botli stealing j and receiving, was sentenced to IS : months' imprisonment, and Metcalf. j found guilty of receiving only, to 1.3 i months.
