STATE OWNERSHIP AND STRIKES.
WILL NEVER STOP THEM. (Received 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 27, j Sir C. G. Wade,- Agent-General fori New South Wales, gave evi-j dence before the Coal Commission that the Railway Board of New South Wales had reduced dangers to a; minimum. The Labour Government of I New South Wales never attempted to I nationalise coal despite the miners' de-j mand. He was certain that State ownership would never stop strikes.' This was proved by the Victorian coal mines, the New South "Wales railways and tramways, the Commonwealth shipbuilding, and the New Zealand coal mines. There was no stimulus to; economy or reduction of excessive staffs. State ownership encouraged bureaucracy in its'desire to avoid responsibility, and encouraged laziness among the miners. All coal after leaving the pithead should be controlled, but that could be accomplished without nationalisation of the whole industry. Miners should be represented on a tribunal, fixing wages and conditions \f labour, but it wouldi be dangerous to discipline if they shared! in the. management of the mines.—(A.j and N.Z. Cable.)
