INDIAN RISING.
SERIOUS WHEN AT HEIGHT. STERN MILITARY MEASURES. 5000 KILLED OR WOUNDED. (Received 9.10 a.m.) LONDON, May 27. * Reports from India show that the re-j cent rising was serious and well organ-j ised. The moderation of the authori-; ties in Delhi encouraged the mob to ex-' trerne violence in Lahore and Amritsar, I where several whites were killed. At both places the military were compelled to use severe repressive measures. | A great mob overawed one quarter of, Amritsar until machine guns were played on them. The Gurkhas could not be re- 1 strained, and a thousand lives were lost.' Equally severe repressive measures were utilised at Lahore, whefe it is be-! lieved 4,000 were killed and wounded altogether. This energy was not expected by the leaders, and the difficulty simmered down.—(A and X.Z. Cable.)
