Tin , fact that a good deal of misconception prevailed about the lionlirp being ■built i>ll the sinnniit of Mount Eden was mentioned by Mr. C- Hudson, Mayor of Mount Eden, to his Council last night. The bonfire was the conception of the Pence Celebration Committee, which was paying up to £100 for its preparation, and if it cost that amount, the money was to be supplied pro-rata by the city and suburban local bodies, and the Government, which paid £ for £ subsidy, so that Mount Eden's contribution would i>e nt the most £3. He had heard all kinds of ridiculous statements made nlmut the bonfire, and had received a petition from residents asking that ho should move to prevent all the trees on the mountain being cut down to make the bonfire. He thought residents should be careful not to put their names to petitions in which the statements were so ridiculously out of accord with fact.
