A GOOD STAKT MADE. READY RESPONSE BY EMPLOYEES"The Returned Soldiers' Information Bureau In Victoria Street is fulfilling its functions in a. very satisfactory manner,said the Mayor (Mr. J. H. Uunson) this morning. "Mr. Tom Long, recently appointed officer ill charge, has taken uj4 his duties, and Mr. Kobert (lortfon, also a returned soldier, has been appointed assistant in charge. These Iwo nflicera will conduct the business of the bureau, and their particular attention will be devoted to that of finding suitable employment for returned men. A very large number were placed last week, and the agency i« proving beyond sanguine anticipations a great boon to the returned men. Although the matter of employment is their chief concern, the en. work with the head ollice of the Patriotic Association in all matters affecting the interests of returned soldiers. Employers throughout the district are asked to give ihe utmost support to the oflieers of the bureau. A very pleasing feature of'the operations last week —the first week in which the offlce. was open—was the response the ofiicers met with Imtli at the hands of employers and of tlie men in the city. If that continues there will be very little ground of complaint respecting tlie treatment of returned men in the matter of employment. It is quite evident that employers of the city and district, in conjunction with the Patriotic Association, consider th? agency which has been established in this employment bureau can render a service (o returned men which will he of enormous benefit to them. This ohjeet, of course, underlies the continuance of tlie work- Arrangements will be made for the officer in charge (Mr. Long) to visit each returning transport and place himself in touch with the men f rom tlio- outset.''
