DEVONPORT BEACHES.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —The question of the beautifying and erection of conveniences on the Devonport foreshore has been troubling those who have given any thought to the matter for a long time, as not only the erection but the cost of upkeep have to be considered. Devonport. population are mainly artisans, clerks, and warehousemen, with a very few retired people, and any great increase in rates will be a hardship to very many. The present Council have been doing good work at the entrance to Devonport. and somewhat neglected the other portion? of the borough. In the near future a big loan is certain, with a corresponding increase in rates, and to undertake the necessary work on the foreshore out of rates only is not practicable. Personally I feel "grateful to you, sir, for ventilating this matter, and hope that it will lead to a workable proposition.—l am, etc., F. HELDT.
