HARBOUR BOARDS OFFER.

EEFERRED TO SPECIAL COMMITTEE.

The offer of the Auckland Harbour Board, subject to validating legislation, of the triangular section bounded by fcturdee street, Bcatty Street and Hobeon Street, containing a little over an aoje of 1-nd. and valued at about £70.00(1 as a site for a peace menionai. on condition that a memorial, costing not less than £20.000, on the lines suggested by the Board's acting engineer, be erected to the satisfaction of the Board, came before the City Council last, evening. The Mayor moved that the matter be referred to a special committee of the Council as a whole, wifh power to add to its number, and that such committee take into consideration a suitable form of war memorial for Auckland. The offer should receive that consideration which its importance merited. It should not be accepted hastily, and all the interests involved should be considered. It had been suggested, also by Mr Cheeseman, curator of the museum, that the museum should he made use of for the purposes of a war memorial, and this was one of several suggestions that the committee might take into consideration. The Council in the meantime should express its appreciation of the Harbour Board's offer. The motion was carried. CAMBRIDGE SCHEME. MONUMENT AXD HALL. At a meeting of the Cambridge District War Memorial Committee it was agreed to hold a public meeting to definitely decide what form the local peace memorial shall take, when the committee wili submit the following proposals on April 15: (1) A monument to the fallen, to he erected in Jubilee Garden, and (2) a War Memorial Hall, to bo erected on th? southeast corner of Victoria Square.

Some members of the committee expressed themselves as favourable to the Dominion war memorial road, and in deference to their wishes information will be sought on the project. The personnel of the committee was increased by the appointment of representatives from each of the surrounding districts.
