TRAWLING IN AUCKLAND.

CONCLUSION OF INQUIRY. MUNICIPAL ATTITUDE. The inquiry into the trawling and fishing conditions of the Hauraki Gulf was concluded yesterday. after several weekt-' sittings. The Commissioner, Mr. E. C. Cutten. presided. Mr E. C. Waddingham. representing the City Council, explained that the object of the municipal venture was to supply the public With an adequate supply of cheap fish, and this would be facilitated by allowing the trawlers to operate nearer the markets. If it were shown that the line men could fulfil the object of the Council, the litter was prepared to close down its fish department. Regarding the contention that the trawlers -were obsolete, he said that if sufficient encouragement were given to trawling more up-to-date vessels would be commissioned. Dealing with tlie question of inspection, the Council was of the opinion that this should take place immediately prior to the sale of the fish to the consume!*, ln conclu_ion, Mr. Richmond urged the necessity for trawling to be as free as possible from restrictions, nnd thus facilitate a supply 0 f t -heap fish to the public.
