ST. PATRICK'S DAY.
■■-" • ■■ ■ i GOOD WEATHER AND VARIED ATTRACTIONS. The celebrations in honour of Ireland's patron saint are being specially favoured by the weather v ,his year, ac after a fine day on Saturday a refreshing rain fell at night, and to-day opened clear and bright for the second round of the festivities. This being St. Patrick's Day proper is observed as a bank holiday, while the legal and insurance offices, the Stock Exchange, and some of the Government offices were also closed. The principal outing for holiday-makers is the Ngaruawahia regatta on the Waikato River, a fixture which has always attracted a large number of city visitors, for, in addition to the usual rowing events, in which the various Auckland clubs are competing, the Maori canoe races and other native competitions form a strong and interesting feature of the programme to pakeha visitors. Other outdoor entertainment for those enjoying a holiday include a monster picnic at Motatupu, to which the ferry steamers took large numbers during the day, the second day's racing at Paeroa of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club's annual meeting, the Auckland Croquet Association's patriotic tournament, bowling and tennis ! tournaments on various greens and lawns, and a cricket match on the Domain between teams representing the Grammar School Old Boys and the Grammar School First Eleven. This eventhe St. Patrick's Day concert, consisting of purely Irish items, will be held in the Town Hall, while at the tepid baths the Akarana Club will hold a swimming carnival.
