WAITEMATA ROWING CLUB. ! COMPETITION FOR SMITH SIIIELD. A KEEN CONTEST. The Waitemata Rowing Clnb held its I annual non-class inter-club competition for J the Smith Shield on Saturday, keen in- ! terest being evinced in the event, which | drew fiv e crews, one being representatives : of the Hamilton Rowing Club. Th e race j j was held over a one-mile course under I favourable conditions, a fairly strong ' southerly breeze from off the shore helping rather than retarding the crews' progress. Smith, was presented to ! the club six years ago to celebrate its opening, and has been competed for annually ever since, the winners being North Shore. Waitemata. West End (twice) and Hamilton. Turner. North Shore Rowing Club.—A. Wright, 1.. White, L. Fruser, G. Eraerali. Waltemnta Boatinng Club.—.7. Magee, C. Cairns, E. Buckler, A. Wolfgramm, R. Nottingham. Mr. W. (i. Mason (president A.1!.A.) i acted as judge, and Mr. G. 11. Reston (vice- I president) as starter. ! There was no delay at tlie starting post, | all crews lining up properly, enabling the starter (Mr. G. H. Reston) to send the ' competitors on their journey without any ' bother. North Shore jumped out lirst, nnd held an advantage to about half way, row- ' ing about 3G to the minute. West End row- : ing 38. Hamilton 32. Waitemata 33. St. George's had to drop out as a result of an > aecMent. the runnners under stroke's sent having broken. At the middle difttance Hamilton and West End came up level to , North Shore, with Waitemata handy on ' the outside position, their coxswain , steering a splendid course, the other boys j coming in to the shore rather much. From three-quarter way, in the calm water, Wai- ! temata drew away gradually, Hamilton and i West End following in this order, the finishing line being passed with Waiti-mata a Cull length ahead of Hamilton. West End being a similar distance behind, third. Shore was close np. j The winners were:—.l. M.igee (stroke). <'. (' Cairns (S). E. H. Buckler (2). A. Wolfgramm (]», R. Nottingham (cox). As the Hamilton four left the skids of the Waitemata boatshed they were accorded : three cheers from the assembled entbusl- , asts for their sportsmanship in coming so ; far for the race. The win was a most popular one. NORTH SHORE YACHt CLUB. : i THE DDNNIN-G CUP. The North Shore Yacht Clnb held a general handicap on Saturday over a harbour course of twelve miles, the first prize ! being a cup presented by Mr James Duu- ' ning, also four other trophies. The race started at 2.50 p.m. from off ' Stanley Bay, 18 out of the 21 entrants crossing the starting line, the first away • being Varuna, closely followed by Naiad, ' Omatere. Marie, Valeria, Mowai, Hilda and i Windward, with the others close behind. j The wind was southwest, a nice sailing ! breeze enabling all pxtras to be carried, and ' the race was sailed In quick time.
