REPORTED GERMAN RETIREMENT TO MEUSE.
LONG RETREAT FROM SCARPE PROJECTED. (Received 11.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, October 11. The London correspondent of the United Press Association learns that the Germans are retiring from the north of the Scarpe to the Meuse. The Allies have completed the capture of the* Argonne Forest, west of the Meuse. The French have captured Bertirourt, ten miles north of Rheims. They are now menacing Guise, an important centre, 15 miles east of St. Quentin. The Italians have captured Troyon, south of Laon.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) A retreat to the line of the Meuse would involve a retirement to a depth of 85 miles and the surrender of nearly the whole of the French territory now held by the Germans, who would be compelled to take up a line approximately from Antwerp, through Namur, Mezieres, and north of Verdun to Metz, thus retreating from the whole of the great salient they hold in France.
