TRANSPORT DEMANDS.
WASHINGTON, September 23.
It is officially announced that 3SG ships aggregating more than 2,000,000 tons deadweight, were completed in the yards under the supervision of the Emergency Fleet Corporation up to September li In addition, in the ejame period, 2(H ships were launched, aggregating 1,223 000 tons deadweight. During August the Shipping Board constructed 261,039 tons of shipping as compared with the total Allied losses for (fiat period, amounting to 259,400 tons United States ship-ways are now double the total number of shipways in the rest of the world. Officials point out that with American and Allied yards working at their fullest capacity the danger of' the submarines starving Europe has apparently ended. The United States is now operating 203 shipyards with 1020 ways.—(A. and N.Z.) Mr. H. C. Hoover, the Food Controller, states that it will be necessary to ship 17,550,000 tons of meats, fats, breadstulls, pusrar, and grain to Europe from the' United States by July, 1919, to make possible the sending of an American , army of 3,500,000 to France by next summer, and to provision adequately the Allied nations. Mr. Hoover pointed out that to obtain the necessary tonnage for the transportation of troops and food it iwill be necessary to withdraw Allied I ships from the Australian and South American trade, transferring them to the service between Europe and North America. — (A. and N.Z.
