WHANGAREI COURT.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAXGARM, Tuesday. A; the Whangarei Magistrate's Court, before Mr. E. W. Burton, S.M., tn-day, K. W. Wood, a New Zealand railway employee, for whom Mr. T. H. .Steadman appeared, was charged with the theft, ot various articles from Government storeto which be had access. Counsel appealed for leniency, as the articles were of no great intrinsic value. Accused was convicted, and lined £5 and ccst.-. 1". W. Hirtzel, of Ruatangatn. was proceeded against by the Whangarei County Inspector for allowing three head of cattle to wander on the Three Mile Bush road. Mr. Gillespie (inspector) paid that straying cattle were a great source of trouble in tbe county. Repeated warning's bad no effect. Ihe magistrate said that the most serious part of the laso was that defendant nad offensively charged Gillespie with what practically amounted to fraud. Counsel pointed out that the accused were all returned soldiers, who looked on the game as gr.nii sport, nol against tbe law. It was commonly played by officers and men in Kgrpt. His Worship, while admitting this, said that returned soldiers in net have regard for tbe law when tbev returned to the Dominion. He lined 'them 10/ each.
