ENEMY MAINTAINS POSITIONS EAST OF ANCRE
, INCREASING RESISTANCE ON AISNE AND VESLE.
(Received 11.50 a.m.)
LONDON, August 6.
The "Daily Chronicle's" correspondent on the British front says that the Germans appear to maintain positions east of the Ancre. They have broken all the bridges north and south of Albert, and are strongly holding the crossings into the town. The Allied captures of booty have not been computed, but probably they total a thousand guns and several thousand machine-guns.
The ''Daily Chronicle's" correspondent on the French front reports that between "Soissons and Rheims the enemy resistance is increasing. Allied patrols which crossed the Aisne and the Vesle at various points met with stubborn resistance, especially near Fisnies, .Sermoisc. and Muizon. German artillery fire is intensifying, and their aviators arc descending to a low altitude and machine-gunning troops.
The sodden roads are considerably hampering the Allied advance. The Vesle is in flood.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
